Smith & Butterfield Optometrists

In the heart of Keswick lies probably the most stylish opticians I’ve ever set foot in. Originally opening in 1926, the practise is managed by husband and wife team Stephen and Katharine Butterflied and dispensing manager Paul Smith.

I was approached to assist on their design work just as Paul became a company partner, and the practise was set to be renovated. They required a brand that was modern and minimal, but also acknowledged the practise’s legacy. The colour scheme is minimal with pops of colour that represent the duo chrome tests you probably recognise from your visits to the optician.

Their new branding has been used throughout the business from stationery, lens clothes, drawer labels, signage and cases, to their front doormat.

The practise expansion was remodelled to include original brick work, wooden floors and up-cycled features. With multiple nods to the practise’s history the rooms are lined with antique lens drawers and intriguing optical implements displayed around the practise. Vintage signs and charts also decorate the walls, along with the original deed to William Cowen himself from 1925.
